May I mention *Philosopher’s Stone.

I don’t get why people always correct others for saying Sorcerer’s Stone. That, too, is the name of the first book. They’re allowed to use that title over Philosopher’s Stone.
As for the confession, even though it wasn’t the greatest thing to give the points that late, Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville deserved them. The trio stopped Voldemort from coming back, I’m pretty sure 50 points each was properly earned. And Neville was such a chicken in the first book that he should have gotten something for trying to keep Gryffindor from possibly losing points.

Because it’s true name is Philosepher’s Stone. That’s what JK Rowling named it, and what it should have been called. I don’t understand why it was changed for Americans anyway. Is Philosepher not a word in the American dictionary?
The Slytherins worked their arses off all year to get those points, and they must have been so exicted to have won. I think Dumbledore should have added the points before, instead of embarrassing the Slytherins like that. He always showed favouritism towards Gryffindor, even back in the Marauder Era.
Neville should have got the points, because he was sticking to the rules while Harry, Hermione, and Ron should have lost points, actually, and been punished for breaking the rules. It makes it seem like the rules are completely pointless and shouldn’t be listened to, and that you get rewarded for breaking them, in fact, and that’s just ridiculous.

I’m not sure why they changed it either (term difference maybe?), and yeah, it didn’t need to be, but that’s what happened. Just because J.K. Rowling used Philosopher doesn’t mean that Sorcerer is wrong. If someone wants to use it, they have every right because that is still the title of the book. I say Sorcerer’s Stone because that’s what I’ve grown up on. I’m not wrong about it and I should be able to use it as much as I want without being “corrected.”
I agree that the better thing to do would be giving the points earlier. However, you can’t deny that Slytherin has been favored, as well. This is just speculation, but I bet anything that Snape probably gave Slytherin’s more points than they deserved and took more points than necessary from the other Houses. He was more lenient on Slytherins, after all. Of course, we’re not shown how other Slytherin’s got their points so I’m not saying they didn’t deserve to win.
But Harry, Ron and Hermione didn’t just break rules. They kept Voldemort from getting the stone and coming back. They deserved those points. Neville deserved his, too, definitely, but taking points away from/punishing the trio after stopping Voldemort from coming back? I mean, it’s like punishing a 13 year old for driving his severely injured mother to the hospital because he broke the rules by driving underage. Sorry for not having a better example, I’m not good at those. Point is, yes, they did break the rules but it was for a great reason. Sometimes rules are made to be broken and this was one of those times.

It’s not the right name though! To every single English/British person it’s Philosepher’s Stone, which is the REAL name for the book. You’re all aware of the name, so surely you should call it what it is meant to be called, instead of what the Americans decided they wanted to call it? I just think it’s so wrong, like with Northern Lights by Philip Pullman which got changed to The Golden Compass for the film. I just think that’s so wrong…
Yeah, Snape favoured them, while the rest of the school hated them, not for their personalities but for who they are. Which is just out of order, I think, that Slytherin is hated on principal.
They did break the rules. They were banned from the Third Floor Corridor, and they ignored those rules. Dumbledore should have sorted out Voldemort himself, instead of getting an 11 year-old to sort out his problems for him. He used Harry, and he shouldn’t have. And he certainly shouldn’t have given points for it. You example: That’s what Ambulances are for, surely?

It is the right name, it’s just not the original name. A lot of people grew up on Sorcerer’s Stone, not Philosopher’s Stone, and even if that’s the original name, it doesn’t make the other one wrong. I’m aware it’s originally another name and I respect that, but I’ve spent 12 years calling it Sorcerer’s Stone, why should I have to start using the other name?
They probably hated them because a lot (certainly not all) of them did not give off a good impression. I can understand why, a lot of the characters we were introduced to were very unpleasant. Although I can’t remember a time where, say, McGonagall was unfair in punishing a Slytherin like Snape was unfair in punishing a Gryffindor.
The first time they went on the 3rd floor was a total accident; that couldn’t have been helped. And Dumbledore couldn’t have sorted that out himself, he wasn’t in the castle at the time. Harry, Ron and Hermione would’ve gone to him if he was. They even told McGonagall but she didn’t believe them. What else would they have done? Let Snape (which actually would have been Voldemort) get the stone and do God knows what with it? They risked their lives to prevent that so they deserved recognition for it. I mean, would you rather they followed the rules or broke them in order to keep the Dark Lord from returning? As for the 13 year old: The last thing on their mind is waiting for an Ambulance. Sometimes those things just don’t get there in a decent time (which is a real shame). Honestly, if I was the kid and saw my mom hurt, I’d just get her in the car. It really depends on the kid and situation but why punish someone who’s breaking the rules in order to make sure someone’s okay? It’s the same for the trio and the stone.

Philosopher’s Stone is the right name. It’s the English name, which makes it the right one as the whole thing is English, including the films, amazingly. I mean, did they make the actors shoot certain scenes twice so that Americans wouldn’t be confused when they called it the Philosopher’s Stone? And the amount of editing that must have gone into the books to make sure not a single Philosopher slipped out…
Oh, because, say, James, Sirius, and Peter gave off such good impressions? That’s ridiculous, and you know it. The Slytherins were brought up in that kind of enviroment, because of the hate they got everywhere else they needed to feel like they had at least some small bit of power. They act as they act because they don’t know anything else because of what they’re life at home must be like. Also, McGonagall might not have been properly unfair but Harry was allowed to do anything he liked, mostly, while a Slytherin would have got a much harsher punishment for it.
The first time they stumbled onto the Third Floor Corridor, they were out after curfew and Filch was chasing them. They were breaking the rules in the first place. Dumbledore should have dealt with it way before, and yes they risked their lives for it, but perhaps they should have waited. Quirrellmort could have never got the stone anyway because he didn’t understand how to get it, and wouldn’t have because his intents weren’t pure or whatevers. No one would do that. I had this discussion with my family, and no one would do it. There’s more risk of you killing your parent by crashing into someone anyway.

It’s the right name just as much as Sorcerer’s Stone is the right name. The publishers (or whoever) may not have really needed to change the title but they did and there will always be people who will say Sorcerer’s Stone instead of Philosopher’s Stone. It doesn’t make them wrong and they shouldn’t have to be corrected.
I never once said Gryffindor didn’t have any jerk students. I mean, of course other houses have jerks. I was only talking about how a lot of the Slytherins we’re introduced to in the series did not give off a good impression so of course other houses didn’t like them, and not just because they’re Slytherins. It’s personality too. And Harry did things for what he thought was the greater good. If a Slytherin was doing what Harry did, McGonagall would have been the same with them as she was with Harry.
You’re right, they were out after curfew, although it’s not like they ignored the rules and purposefully went to the Third Floor Corridor. And perhaps they should have waited, but they didn’t know how everything would have turned out; Harry didn’t until after everything happened. For all they knew, Snape-but-really-Quirrel/Voldemort could have easily stolen the stone and done God knows what with it. Dumbledore was gone, so they couldn’t have told him. They told McGonagall but she didn’t believe them, so in their mind, they had no choice but to stop it themselves and if they had to break some rules, so be it. The kid is taking that risk for the good just like Harry, Ron and Hermione took that risk for the good.
